My Research
On a planet suspended in space, nothing is ever upside-down or right-side-up. A flat map cannot tell the whole truth.
Recent neurodiversity and disability studies have toppled ideological assumptions about normality.
and Findings
Misunderstandings about neurodiversity have resulted when our complicated empathies rooted interrelationships, are contrasted with accepted reactions based on momentary or entrenched loyalties. Never-the-less, I strive to communicate one autistic-dyslexic view of Earth by zeroing into specific coordinates.
Short Biography
Tegan L Smith is multidisciplinary artist who has exhibited sculpture and installation art in Canada and participated in group shows internationally. Day jobs in economics research and publishing inform a multidisciplinary practice. Smith is from Saskatchewan and lives in Toronto, Canada. Geographic memories crop up in mapping and photographic work. While Smith has always acknowledged neurodiversity as a working methodology, recent webwork confronts dyslexic and autistic choices in processes, media, and subject matter.
Current web works in progress called Coordinates of Home and Disorienting revolve around the use of statistics and measurement systems to impose standards for bodily norms, navigation, and land boundaries. Research about compass coordinates began with a passion for maps and questions about information selected for inclusion. Particular travels were instigated by the 19th survey to establish the Metric System as a fraction of Earth’s circumference. The projects were developed at artist residencies in places chosen for their proximity to Earth measuring history and places Tegan calls home.
